Cappella San Donato V. M.

Situata in località Pantano, la cappella di San Donato venne edificata intorno al 1704 e ingrandita verso il 1893. Durante i lavori di restauro con grande sorpresa sono venuti alla luce preziosissimi affreschi di diverse epoche storiche: un primo strato di origine bizantina o longobarda, un secondo strato, successivo, fa riferimento al periodo normanno e alla progressiva latinizzazione del territorio
. Chiesa a due navate, la porta d’ingresso è posta sul lato sud-ovest, sormontata da tre  nicchie, si accede all’interno dell’edificio mediante una breve gradinata semicircolare adagiata sulla roccia.

Gli affreschi più recenti, posti all’ingresso della cappella, sono quelli risalenti al XII-XIII secolo. Il primo affresco raffigura San Leonardo con il pastorale e la catena, accanto Sant’Antonio Abate, San Cirillo e San Metodio; sulla parete in alto è raffigurata la Dormitio della Vergine.

Il primo strato, invece, è quello più antico risalente al X-IX secolo. A questo periodo risalgono gli affreschi di San Nicola, San Pietro e San Giovanni.

L’esterno della cappellaè dominato dalla facciata sormontata dal campanile, tre nicchie ad arco sul portale d’ingresso, con al centro la stautina lignea di San Donato.

Abbellita dagli americani agli inizi del 1900, nel 1986 venne realizzato un dipinto che valorizza la cappella raffigurando San Donato in gloria sul paese

 Located in Pantano, the chapel of St. Donato was built around 1704 and enlarged towards 1893. During the restoration works, with great surprise, precious frescoes from different historical periods came to light: a first layer of Byzantine or Lombard origin, a second layer, subsequent, refers to the Norman period and the progressive Latinization of the territory. Church with two naves, the entrance door is located on the south-west side, surmounted by three niches, accessed inside the building via a short semicircular staircase set on the rock. The most recent frescoes, placed at the entrance to the chapel, are those dating back to the 12th-13th century. The first fresco depicts St. Leonardo with the crosier and the chain, alongside St. Antonio Abate, St. Cirillo and St. Methododio; the Dormitio of the Virgin is depicted on the upper wall. The first layer, on the other hand, is the oldest one dating back to the 10th-9th century. The frescoes of St. Nicola, St. Pietro and St. Giovanni date back to this period. The exterior of the chapel is dominated by the facade surmounted by the bell tower, three arched niches on the entrance portal, with the wooden stautina of St. Donato in the center. Embellished by the Americans in the early 1900s, in 1986 a painting was created that enhances the chapel depicting St. Donato in glory over the country
